Not only are we avid hikers, but we’re also headed to San Diego in a few hours…where we will hike. I am excited to be going on a little mini-vacation, however, we need to stay on a budget. One way we do this is by packing our own snacks instead of stopping for fast food or at a gas station.
So, last night I had an inspired idea. We were at the store getting some groceries anyway, and I thought, since we would be hiking and sitting in the car for a couple of hours, why don’t I make some trail mix? Walking down the Halloween aisle gave me an even better idea…why not make it Halloween trail mix?!
Since I had the kids with me, which is actually a rare occurrence…at the store anyway, I let them each pick a candy they wanted to add to our mix. Little Bean picked candy corns, Tiny dancer picked plain M&Ms, and I decided on those little pumpkins that taste like candy corns. Hubs just wanted peanuts.
To make our trail mix slightly more savory than sweet, I decided to add cashews and pretzels sticks as well. Be careful when buying cashews. I found that at our Walmart the prices between brands varied wildly. It is worth the time spent to find a good price.

How to:
Pick a few varieties of candy you would like to add. For ours we used fall-colored plain M&Ms, candy corns, and mallowcream pumpkins.
Pick a few salty treats. I used peanuts, cashews, and pretzels.
To Make a gallon plastic bag full, mix approx 12 oz of peanuts, 8 oz cashews, and 2 cups of preztels. Add to that half a bag of candy corns, half a bag of pumpkins, and an about 8 oz of M&Ms.
Store in a plastic bag or airtight container.
